A Conversation in the Wilderness

Danielle Boes reviews The Laws of Spirit by Dan Millman

I read this short (120 page) but powerful book, in one sitting the first time. I say the first time because this is a book I will pick up again and again. It’s simple yet profound lessons will be ones I will want to revisit.

It tells the story of Dan’s (the author) encounter with a sage and the journey in faith they take together through the wilderness of life. “And so, wandering off the beaten path of my life, I opened the door and found the sage, sitting quietly, smiling up at me.” And so it begins…

In each chapter the nameless sage teaches Dan a “law of Spirit.” There are twelve, such as choice, integrity, & surrender–and while not identical–they parallel the Twelve Spiritual powers as taught by Unity.

The sage first explains how the law works, then shows an example in nature, and finally Dan learns how the law applies to his life and affairs.

Some laws are harder to learn than others, as we’ve all experienced in our own lives. But the sage reminds us that to work with these spiritual principles: “…listen to the intuitive wisdom of your heart, where Spirit speaks,”

I found reading this book helped me to see where I can find the softer parts of trying times. It reiterated that we can only live in the present moment. It spoke of God’s love for his creation.

With a beautiful poem to start each chapter this book delivers important life lessons in easy to manage chapters that read like a lovely novel.

The sage summarizes the journey in this way:

“Life will provide you with challenges” she said, “but as you relax into life, even your difficulties will have a pleasurable aspect, like playing a challenging game or solving a puzzle.”

“I can’t shake the feeling that all this is much easier said than done.”

“Anything seems difficult until it becomes easy.”
